State Rep. Donni Steele of Orion Township expressed disappointment over the failure of the House Education Committee to address certain Republican school safety bills. In a statement released recently, Rep. Steele highlighted the lack of consideration for bills aimed at enhancing school safety measures.

Steele, who sponsored House Bill 4093 requiring OK2SAY program contact information on student ID cards, criticized the lack of action on important legislation. She lamented, "I feel like I’m still in high school being forced to play political games just so we can keep kids safe in school."

The representative emphasized her advocacy for school safety resources and the OK2SAY program, stating, "I’ve been an outspoken advocate for passing legislation that would secure school safety resources, improve and expand access to OK2SAY, and guarantee schools have quality crisis plans." However, the bills sponsored by those advocating for school safety did not receive committee consideration.

Steele expressed frustration with the political dynamics at play, noting, “Instead of working together on behalf of the people of Michigan, Democrats are embracing the ugliest part of politics." She added, “My bill would ensure kids can access expert help when they or a friend is facing a crisis." Despite bipartisan support for the bill at its introduction, it is unlikely to progress further.

The fate of the OK2SAY bill and other school safety measures remains uncertain as they languish without committee action, prompting concerns about the prioritization of political interests over the well-being of Michigan students.
